RESUMO

The influence of a resistive load on the starting performance of a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine is investigated numerically. The model used is based upon a low Mach number assumption; it couples the two-dimensional nonlinear flow and heat exchange within the thermoacoustic active cell with one-dimensional linear acoustics in the loaded resonator. For a given engine geometry, prescribed temperatures at the heat exchangers, prescribed mean pressure, and prescribed load, results from a simulation in the time domain include the evolution of the acoustic pressure in the active cell. That signal is then analyzed, extracting growth rate and frequency of the dominant modes. For a given load, the temperature difference between the two sides is then varied; the most unstable mode is identified and so is the corresponding critical temperature ratio between heater and cooler. Next, varying the load, a stability diagram is obtained, potentially with a predictive value. Results are compared with those derived from Rott's linear theory as well as with experimental results found in the literature.

Glucosuria in okapis (Okapia johnstoni) was first documented in 1980, yet the etiology remains unclear. In August 2006, an attempt to lower glucosuria in captive okapi by diet modification (omitting all fruit and adding unmolassed beet pulp) was started at the Antwerp Zoo. To study the possible relationship between glucosuria and diet, stress, and/or pregnancy, four okapis were monitored over a period of 4.5 yr. One animal, born in 2006, became glucosuric near the age of three. Three okapis were adults at the start of the study and had been glucosuric for more than 5 yr. The glucose/creatinine urinary ratio values of these four glucosuric animals did not change considerably over time despite dietary changes. Stress did not appear to influence glucosuria in these okapi. Urinary ratio decreased during the second half of pregnancy in two females. In conclusion, the diet change did not reduce glucosuria, but pregnancy appeared to lower urinary glucose in okapis.

Contrary to the numerous reports on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in domestic animals, only three articles concerning zoo animals are documented in the literature. A skin infection of an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) calf was most likely acquired from an infected caretaker. Another zoo detected MRSA in the rumen content of a mouflon (Ovis aries), and, in a third facility, it was reported in a fistulous wound at the coronary band of a digit of an Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis). In the present study, which lasted 13 months and involved 93 different individual mammals that belonged to 40 species and 19 families housed in the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, Belgium, this study reports the absence of MRSA in swabs of nostrils, skins, conjunctiva, vulva, abscess, and arm rests in public spaces. Samples were enriched overnight and inoculated on a selective chromogenic medium.

A model of an idealized thermoacoustic engine is formulated, coupling nonlinear flow and heat exchange in the heat exchangers and stack with a simple linear acoustic model of the resonator and load. Correct coupling results in an asymptotically consistent global model, in the small Mach number approximation. A well-resolved numerical solution is obtained for two-dimensional heat exchangers and stack. The model assumes that the heat exchangers and stack are shorter than the overall length by a factor of the order of a representative Mach number. The model is well-suited for simulation of the entire startup process, whereby as a result of some excitation, an initially specified temperature profile in the stack evolves toward a near-steady profile, eventually reaching stationary operation. A validation analysis is presented, together with results showing the early amplitude growth and approach of a stationary regime. Two types of initial excitation are used: Random noise and a small periodic wave. The set of assumptions made leads to a heat-exchanger section that acts as a source of volume but is transparent to pressure and to a local heat-exchanger model characterized by a dynamically incompressible flow to which a locally spatially uniform acoustic pressure fluctuation is superimposed.

Previous studies have indicated that the gross anatomical structure of the stomach of the babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa) differs markedly from that of all other pigs. This light and scanning electron microscopic study revealed a previously unknown, microscopic structure characterised by a 'honeycomb' pattern at the luminal surface of the tunica mucosa. The walls of the 'honeycomb' were about 0.20-0.25 mm high and appeared almost entirely composed of various types of bacteria. Underneath the bacteria the walls were formed by thin tubes composed of non-glandular squamous epithelial-like cells, extending from the tops of the ridges between each glandular pit. There is as yet no evidence of a comparable structure in the stomach of any other pig, or to our knowledge any other forestomach-fermenting mammal.

Faecal samples, collected from 200 healthy animals in Antwerp Zoo, were examined for the presence of pathogenic Listeria spp. A two-stage standard isolation (ISO) method was combined with immunomagnetic separation (IMS). ALOA agar, a chromogenic isolation medium, differentiating Listeria spp. on the basis of beta-glucosidase and phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC) activity, was compared with PALCAM agar. Confirmation of the isolates was based on conventional biochemical tests and a disc test, which detects a specific aminopeptidase produced by all Listeria spp. except Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria spp. were isolated from 42 (21.0%), L. monocytogenes from 14 (7.0%), and Listeria ivanovii from two (1.0%) faecal samples. The application of IMS after primary enrichment detected pathogenic Listeria spp. in 12 (6.0%) samples. The ISO method, combining primary and secondary enrichment, detected pathogenic Listeria spp. in 15 (7.5%) samples. The sensitivity of IMS compared to the ISO method was 73.3% and the specificity was 99.5%. ALOA agar was superior to PALCAM agar for isolation of Listeria spp. The disc test identified all L. monocytogenes isolates. IMS after primary enrichment was a suitable screening method, but secondary enrichment increased the number of positive samples.
